The clocks have been wound back and the darker, cooler and sometimes slightly gloomier days have set in. Just as well we have the Easter break to look forward to! With this in mind, our April issue of Style is an Easter celebration, and what better way to start than with a report on the Fabergé eggs from Russia. The Russian revolution and the mystery behind the missing Fabergé eggs has always intrigued me, so I enjoyed every moment of research on this topic. We provide something to inspire you with an interview on page 14 with ex-St Margaret’s students Gussie Cohen and Lucy Tothill. Their story of determination and forward-thinking in founding the Educating Girls Globally (E.G.G.) programme to support those in developing countries will leave you feeling proud to be a Cantabrian. In our living section, we look at mod cons that can make life that little bit easier, as well as add wow factor to any room. SHARING A VISION

Christine de Felice speaks with Gussie Cohen and Lucy Tothill, two women focused on helping others learn. Two former Christchurch school students have co-founded an international network called Educating Girls Globally (E.G.G.). Through this, they reach out to schools around the world, asking them to fundraise for projects aimed at improving the educational standards and opportunities for girls in the developing world. Christine asks what set Gussie Cohen and Lucy Tothill on this path, what their work with the organisation involves, and why they chose Malawi as the country in which to launch their school building project. What first inspired you to start E.G.G.? When Lucy and I were in our final year of high school (2013) at St Margaret’s College, we went to a leadership conference in Sydney. Here, we met many other like-minded students, and came away from the conference inspired to make an impact in our local and global communities. Recognising that there are 60 million girls out of school worldwide, Lucy and I co-founded E.G.G. with the vision to improve the standard of and access to girls’ education in the developing world, by uniting a global network of young leaders. Having been fortunate to receive a fantastic education at St Margaret’s, we wanted to pay it forward and do our bit to fight for equal opportunities in girls’ education worldwide. Our aim is to raise awareness and funds for girls’ education. Why did you decide to raise funds for E.G.G. through schools? Given that most schools do some form of fundraising, the power of E.G.G. comes from combining the funds raised by schools from around the globe to make a profound impact together.

This is a student-led initiative, so it is up to the student leaders in each school to plan and implement their own fundraising events. In the four years since E.G.G. has been established, we have involved over 60 schools across seven different countries and raised over $100,000 for construction projects at girls’ schools in Malawi. We have completed a number of projects with our construction partners, Build A School. Currently, we are building a girls’ boarding hostel at a village school, which will allow girls to safely attend school. How do you get your message out to schools around the world and recruit them into the fundraising programme? To begin with, we started by connecting with schools that had students attending the Alliance of Girls’ Schools leadership conference, hosted each year in Sydney. We were in contact with these high school students post-conference, and even today the conference is a great platform for recruitment each year. Every year, we email schools all around the world, with videos and information packs. We also engage with students via social media, predominantly on Facebook. We find this is a fantastic way to communicate important messages, and it allows our network of leaders to stay in touch, share ideas and report back on fundraisers. The recruitment process itself is quite simple: to join E.G,G., schools must simply agree to run one or more fundraising events throughout the year. This is a student-led initiative, so it is up to the students themselves to plan and implement fundraisers. This gives them a great opportunity to develop their own leadership skills. The focus is on raising awareness of girls’ education as an issue, as well as raising money, which directly funds the construction of projects at girls’ schools in Malawi.

What are some examples of fundraising that schools have done? The schools involved in E.G.G. have held a range of fundraising events including mufti days, barbecue fundraisers, putting on school or community concerts, auction fundraisers, pink afternoon teas and hosting sports games. A personal favourite of ours is the ‘Tan-O-Meter’, which involves students voting for two or three staff members to receive a spray tan – the more money raised, the darker the intensity of the tan. We are always impressed every year by the range of creative fundraisers that the schools involved come up with.

There are many countries in Africa and around the world where girls and boys have little access to education. Why did you choose Malawi for your E.G.G. project? We chose to work to improve the standard of girls’ education in Malawi, originally because that is where our partnered organisation (Build A School) is based. Malawi is one of the least-developed countries in the world, with over 62 per cent of Malawians living below the poverty line. Girls in particular face many challenges in going to school in Malawi. Traditional gender roles and cultural beliefs mean that education is not within reach for many girls. Furthermore, the custom of early marriage, combined with the dangers of commuting to school and expectations of girls within the household, prevent many girls from receiving an adequate education. There is, therefore, a huge demand for the funding of girls’ education in Malawi, and we recognised this opportunity to work on ongoing projects with the communities there.

How did you connect with Build a School? Build A School is a UK-registered charity based in Malawi and we partner with them to complete our construction projects. After some research, we discovered them online. Following a series of Skype calls with their co-ordinator, Ann Page, we decided that they were a great fit for E.G.G., as their passion for equality in education closely aligns with ours. Being a small organisation, we are able to work closely with them through every step of the projects we undertake. We work with their architects, builders and contractors to plan and implement projects. Having this relationship means we are able to ensure that every dollar is well spent and directly improves girls’ education. Have you visited Malawi to see your projects first hand? In January, we visited Malawi for the first time. It was incredible to meet the Build A School team, and be shown the projects E.G.G. has funded over the past four years. It was particularly rewarding to meet the girls at the schools where these projects are being constructed. At Kabuthu, where we are currently constructing a new girls’ boarding hostel, the girls showed us their current living arrangements and told us about some of the difficulties they face daily in receiving an education. While it was confronting, and in many instances,

heartbreaking to see the challenges they face, it was uplifting to be able to talk to them and see that the projects E.G.G. funds are truly making an impact. The girls at Kabuthu will soon be moving into safer, more hygienic and more comfortable living conditions. When we talked to the principal, he informed us that enrolments for girls at this school had already increased greatly since construction began on the boarding hostel. While in Malawi, we also had the very rare opportunity to meet 14 village chiefs and address them in a meeting! We told them about E.G.G. and they described the importance of improving the standard of girls’ education in their villages. It was humbling to be in their presence and to feel their appreciation for our work. Apart from your work with E.G.G. what do you do? Are you working or studying? We are both working and studying in Auckland, at the University of Auckland. Lucy is studying a BA/LLB (hons) degree, majoring in Ancient History; and I am also studying a Bachelor of Law and Arts, with a double major in French and Politics. We both work alongside our studies – I work part-time at KPMG, doing an internship in management consulting, and Lucy works in after-school care with children.

highly-regarded pieces of decorative art, fabergé eggs were created by Peter Carl fabergé, of the house of fabergé, between 1885 and 1917. the eggs were made in russia and usually contained a tiny surprise inside, as elaborate as a bejewelled clockwork toy. Should one hit the market today, it would be worth at least $30 million. the russian royal family commissioned 50, gifting them to each other at easter. Most elaborately designed and referred to today as the ’imperial eggs’, 43 have been found, but the whereabouts of seven remains a mystery. The first Fabergé egg was made for Tsar Alexander III, as an easter gift for his wife, the empress Maria feodorovna, in 1885. Known as the hen egg, it was crafted from gold with an opaque white enamelled shell. Inside was a “yolk”, with a pure gold hen enclosed, in a similar fashion to a russian nesting doll. Inside the hen was a mini diamond replica of the royal crown and a tiny ruby egg pendant. empress Maria was so delighted by the gift that Alexander appointed Fabergé a “goldsmith by special appointment to the Imperial Crown”, and commissioned another egg the following year and so the tradition continued. Peter Carl fabergé was given complete freedom for the design of future imperial easter eggs. the designs became more and more elaborate, and not even the tsar was aware what spectacular creations would be made each year. After Alexander III’s death on November 1, 1894, his son nicholas II carried on the tradition and presented a Fabergé egg to both his wife, Alexandra feodorovna, and his mother, the Dowager empress Maria feodorovna. the imperial eggs gained attention of the upper class. fabergé was asked to make similar eggs for the likes of the Duchess of Marlborough, the rothschild family and the Yusupovs. Industrialist Alexander Kelch commissioned 12 eggs, though only seven appear to have been completed.

the violent russian revolutions of 1917 saw the end of this extravagant tradition. In october 1917, the Bolsheviks seized power and the tsar and his family fled to ekaterinburg, where they were executed the following July. With the tzars overthrown, the Fabergé family fled russia. The eggs were confiscated. Ten were held at the Kremlin Armoury, another 10 are thought to have been stolen in 1918, and many more were sold by the Bolsheviks and scattered across the West. Inadvertently, Starlin saved a number of the eggs by selling them at an extremely low rate to foreign investors. others were thought to have been melted down for their precious metals and jewels. Today you can find 10 of the imperial easter eggs on display at Moscow’s Kremlin Armoury Museum. Queen elizabeth has three eggs in her own collection. from time to time an egg will reappear. the most recent of which was the third Imperial easter egg of 1887.

INTrIguINg FAbergé eggS 1887: third imperial easter egg Discarded as a worthless item within a deceased estate, this egg ended up in an American flea market. It was purchased by a man who had intentions of melting down the gold to surpass the £8000 ($14,000) purchase price. When the scrap-metal value was too low, he stubbonly held on to his ‘bad’ purchase. Years later, he googled the name etched on the timepiece inside the egg, which fortunately connected him to a british Fabergé expert. The £20-million ($35.6-million) goldmine that had been sitting in a humble kitchen in the Mid West, uSA, was purchased by a private collector. Antique dealer Wartski was given permission to show the egg to the public in London, in April 2014. 1895: rosebud egg The first egg given to Tsar Nicholas II’s new bride empress Alexandra Feodorovna. The yellow-enamelled rosebud inside was a symbol of their former home in germany and its rose garden, in which they shared their first easter. Later owned by an english couple, the central panel was reportedly damaged when the bejewelled egg was thrown across the room during an argument.

There is nothing more exciting then stepping inside a home that proudly sits at 180m², only to be confronted with a sense of space. For designer Nick Officer, of First Light Studio, efficient floor plans are something he is particularly passionate about, with his journey in architecture beginning with the international success of a compact one-bedroom 70m² home. “180m² is on the bigger side of what we design,” he shares. “When it comes to architecture, bigger is not necessarily better, it’s just bigger.” For homeowners robyn and Peter smith the intention was to build a townhouse that they could “lock-up and leave”. despite having undertaken a number of renovations in the past, this was the first time the couple had built. Faced with a rebuild in the wake of the Canterbury Earthquakes they made the decision to build a home for them on a site that previously had housed a rental property. “It was a typical Christchurch bungalow, which unfortunately had to be demolished, providing an opportunity to modernise what was a rather tired suburban section,” explains Nick.. “The brief was to create a building in keeping with its surroundings and neighbourhood context, that was respectful of its predecessor but with its own sleek, chic personality,” he continues. “An injection of something new, with something old.” Maximising the site, the result is a light, openplan, rectilinear townhouse, which exceeded Peter and robyn’s expectations. “We really loved what they came up with.” Translating the design into its striking physical form was Peter and robyn’s son, Jeremy. Passionate about his craft, Jeremy’s business is aptly named The Woodsmith and is building a reputation for beautiful bespoke detailing. In the

case of his parent’s home, this is found in the staircase. “We love the whole place,” enthuse the couple, “but without doubt the best part is the staircase: it doesn’t even touch the ground.” More closely resembling a piece of art than a functional aspect of the home, the floating staircase is made of solid wood and was built on-site. Forming part of the staircase are vertical solid wood beams, which create a connection between the west-facing gallery and the rest of the home. A series of three metre by one metre windows, the west-facing gallery is a balance of architectural detail and functionality. Adding interest to the western wall, both internally and externally and boasting double height ceilings, it also brings natural light and garden views into the home. “The house has a minimal approach to detail,” explains Nick. “The design is expressed in the form, which extends inside with architectural elements, such as the staircase and the west gallery adding to the success of the space.” As an interior designer, robyn was all too happy to turn her hand to crafting an interior unique to them. “We travel a bit and one thing we love is hotel design. With this in mind I decided to be a bit more adventurous and bring in some quirky wallpaper ideas in the lounge, cloakroom and landing. “I usually work in a more timeless fashion and really had to push my boundaries with this house, and, of course, found it much harder to do than someone else’s!” The result, however, is beautiful. The vibrant wallpapers sit in perfect harmony against the soft neutrals and natural textures found elsewhere in the home.

The ground floor is comprised of a generous central open-plan kitchen/living/dining, a second lounge and a guest suite (tucked behind the kitchen). “Complete with en suite, the guest wing is entirely separate from the rest of the house, which is often not the case,” explains Nick. “separating the guest and main bedrooms allows the house to function seamlessly and privately while guests are visiting. “Two second-level bedrooms, each with their own en suite then complement the ground floor.” For robyn and Peter, their 180m² ‘compact’ home perfectly suits their needs, having provided them with their much sought-after “lock-up and leave” city townhouse. however, with the number of grandchildren having jumped from two to nine, the need for more outdoor play area is calling and they are well underway with the design and build of their second First Light Studio home. Nick has done the plans, Jeremy is building it and Robyn is doing the interior. “The first house was such a success, we thought we would do it all over again,” laugh the couple.

So, how does this translate into the home? Luci Morris takes a look. In the home, technology is found everywhere we look: from the state-of-the-art appliances in the kitchen and laundry, to our home security. Our homes are no longer controlled by us, they are smarter than ever before and are driven by technology. essentially, a smart home sees all aspects of the home controlled from your smartphone. From security, to heating, cooling, lighting, irrigation and even the pulling of blinds, through technology we are able to personalise our home environments when we aren’t even there! This saves us money, time and energy. many systems will even allow you to create entire ‘scenes’ at one touch of the button. prepare your home for your return at the end of the day,

or lock it up as you dash out the door to work – it’s all become so simple. While pre-wiring your home during the construction stage is the most effective way to embrace a smart home, a simple Google search reveals a number of over-the-counter systems that allow you to embrace smart home technology on a smaller scale, controlling aspects such as security, irrigation, and home heating. But technology in the home doesn’t end there. With analogue television switched off in New Zealand in 2013, even the most technophobic were forced to embrace technology, with new televisions and source boxes required to ensure we could still sit down and watch our favourite show.

The engine behind any home entertainment system is the source: Freeview, Sky, Blu-Ray, DVD, gaming device and the list goes on. If plugged in, the source simply sends the image and sound out through the television. A larger system will work in conjunction with a receiver, which processes the information and passes the sound through to your speakers. From floor-standing to recessed, speakers come in a range of styles enabling you to tailor-make your sound and overall look. When it comes to selecting the perfect television or screen you need to think about how close you will be sitting: is the screen going to be used for viewing sport and movies in a designated media room or it is for everyday use? It is important you don’t overwhelm a small room with a large screen and while size may not always matter, viewing distance does. You want to be far enough away from the screen so that the picture is natural in appearance; too close and you may notice the individual pixels making up the image. consumer reports indicate that as a general rule you should be sitting 1.5-2 metres from a 40-47-inch high-definition (HD) screen, and 1.8-2.5 metres from a 50-inch HD screen. You don’t have to have a big entertainment system or touch pads in every room to embrace technology, however. There are a number of mod-cons out there that bring an ease of living into the home.

His ethereal fragments of the imagination share with us – through the form, material and colour of his paintings – a notion of the sublime. This is a notion that the population of Canterbury well understands after being confronted with earthquakes and fires. These incidents were often described as surreal in that they were beyond normal reality and hard to describe, when in fact they were sublime. the experiences were beyond our capacity to understand them, but at the same time provided insight into our human condition, hope of something beyond us, something beyond the structures of our human brain, an inkling of our immortality. Canterbury is fortunate to have the paintings of Edwards to articulate this for them.

simon edwards is a regular contributor to Art in A Garden and it is there that I first saw his beautiful paintings. They stand out in their execution of an atmospheric landscape, familiar to most New Zealanders even if unable to pin point their actual location. edwards was born in Christchurch, where he attended art school at the University of Canterbury and continues to live and work. It is, therefore, only natural that the south Island landscape should be the source of his work. In his artist statement he describes himself as a modernist in that he is aware of his materials, conscious of his methodology and follows traditional forms of the landscape. In the process of painting he builds up a dialogue between the medium, the landscape and himself. however, edwards’ paintings go beyond being a record of a place, they invite us to consider: what is beauty; what is the sublime? the subject matter is of the physical world; mountains, the ocean, the sky, and the elements of wind, ice, rain, and fire, painted in a way that we are drawn into beautiful – but perilous – landscapes. In 3000AD, ‘Longinus’ put forward a theory that great words or rhetoric could move us, transcend our everyday thoughts and emotions creating a feeling beyond words, beyond metaphor and symbolism. these words elevated the soul. Later, in the 17th century, englishman edmund Burke popularised this idea. he contended that the sublime was a response to objects in nature or music and art that moved us in a way that we feared for our mortality. He said that terror at a safe distance

rECENT BuILDING? Architect Richard Dalman gives us his insight into Christchurch’s best post-quake buildings.

So, what is Christchurch’s best new building post the earthquakes? Is it the Transitional Cathedral, ilex in the Botanic Gardens, the Bus Exchange, the Deloitte’s Building, or even the Fridge Library? While all of the above buildings add to the Christchurch architectural environment, the Fridge Library is a personal favourite of mine. It’s a cracker. An old glass-fronted fridge and an abandoned couch that somehow just arrived, on an empty site on the corner of Barbadoes and Kilmore streets. Originally stocked with a few books, the collection has grown over the years as people have taken or borrowed some to read and replaced with others. This is a ‘pop-up’ that truly speaks of the Christchurch community spirit post earthquakes. But is it architecture? I guess that depends on your definition. A structure with a useful outdoor space in front, considered and appropriate in its location, privately funded for community use. It offers function and delight. My vote would be yes, but I know many of my colleagues would disagree. But for Architecture with a capital A, the best recent building is surely the Transitional (Cardboard) Cathedral. And this is probably New Zealand’s most well-known building internationally. It was designed by world-renown Japanese architect Shigeru Ban who won the 2014 Pritzker Architecture Prize (the top world architecture award). He is perhaps the most famous architect to have ever worked in New Zealand. I have heard Shigeru Ban talk on several occasions. His practice is split between post-disaster work which he doesn’t charge for, and other more standard commissions.

Christchurch is very fortunate to have this building. It ticks many of the “Great Architecture” boxes. • It responds to the site. Its location is on the site of an old church opposite one of Christchurch’s four main squares, and also opposite the CTV building site where many of the architect’s countrymen were killed. • It responds to the Christchurch Cathedral that it temporarily replaces. Triangular proportions of each end of the Cathedral were studied, and the ends of the Transitional Cathedral responds to these. The new building morphs between the two different-shaped ends, creating an interesting exterior form, but more importantly a wonderful interior space. The glass window to the north also responds to the original rose window of the Christchurch Cathedral. • It responds to the situation. Christchurch needed a new central worship space, and we needed it quickly. The simple construction system enabled a fast construction process. • The plan is simple and rational. The building is easy to understand and use as a visitor. • It is for public use. Shigeru Ban said he would only be involved if the building would be for public use, not just for church use. This is the case, and it appears to be well used by many different groups and organisations throughout Christchurch. • People love it. I always enjoy being inside, and I always take my New Zealand and overseas guests to see the building, and they are always impressed! While the building was designed to be temporary, my hope is that it becomes permanent.

Lynette McFadden March is always a frantic part of the year for me. In fact, if I’m completely honest, it’s a mixture of chaos, manic activity and stress. As a franchise, we work to a financial year that completes on March 31st and the irony of an April 1st restart has always seemed appropriate. It’s no surprise we endeavour to complete the year strongly, driven by an old-fashioned mix of personal pride, rigid deadlines and a desire to do the best possible job for our clients. We are not alone: our industry competes for the hard-to-wear ‘best in the business’ label and as a leader I’m driven by the credibility this delivers as well as opportunities for our company and our people. It’s also the time of year where we commence business planning and after 23 years of this, coupled with the quarterly reviews and numerous associated meetings, you can see why March is a little mad.It’s not just planning an effective business session with all the associated collateral, it’s using it as an opportunity to

engage and connect at a deeper level with your people. I’ve navigated my way through many different types of plans – massive forms that you filled with dreams and goals, as well as single sheets that had a focus on facts, numbers and stats – and all of them had their place. Personally, I favour a mixture of both, and because I respond well to the accountability a good plan encourages, I am an absolute advocate of their benefits in business and life. After years of experimentation, I’ve come to the following conclusions regardless of the status of the plan. 1. It’s better to have a plan than not. No one wants to just float. At best, you could go forward, but the likelihood is you’ll go nowhere … or backward. So, get a plan. It doesn’t have to be fancy; the priority is to have one, not how it looks.

Then it’s about watching the plan become a set of actions; that’s where the real beauty starts. Fingers crossed.

This brings to mind a flowering cherry tree on a neighbouring property on the street where i live. it would be 40-50 years old and in its mature form is an amazing specimen with a spectacular blossom display in spring. it is well-positioned in an established garden where it is visible and enjoyed by everyone on the street. it shades the footpath in summer and gives a distinctive character to the streetscape. to lose the visual impact this tree has on its local surroundings would be a great loss, and due to its thoughtful, original planting, there seems no reason why it wouldn’t be there and enjoyed by our community for many decades to come.

on a recent trip to the local refuse centre, i was struck by the amount of ‘greenwaste’ being dumped by an almost continuous stream of car and trailers – all loaded to the hilt with a mixed selection of flax, pittosporum and other woody trimmings. i couldn’t help but see this as a whole lot of trees and shrubs that 10, 20 or even 30 years ago were planted in the wrong place. it does seem a pity to be removing plant material that could have had many more years of life had its initial planting and selection been given a bit more thought. A successful planting would be defined by many as one that over time can express a plant’s mature form. this would especially be true of trees that are all too often viewed as a liability as they reach maturity. to avoid the costs of undue maintenance and premature removal of any planting you are about to undertake, ask yourself is this the right plant in the right place? is there enough room for your selected specimen to grow without it eventually casting unwanted shade into the living area of your home? Will a mature canopy overhang the neighbour’s property and create a nuisance factor for them? Will the amount of leaf drop create a maintenance headache for you? Apart from the financial cost of ongoing maintenance and eventual removal, perhaps the biggest cost of removing a poorly selected planting is the redundant time it took to grow and the years ahead before a replacement specimen will start to have a meaningful spatial presence. a well-chosen tree or planting, rather than being a future liability, has many benefits.

The grass really is greener... Nothing beats the scent of a freshly mown lawn. For many of us, this sensory hit instantly triggers memories of balmy childhood summers and outdoor gatherings of family and friends. Traditional lush lawns are hard wearing and soft underfoot. They can handle the intensive foot traffic families and dogs mete out and provide a soft safe place for young children to play. Picnicing or relaxing on your lawn will provide a cooler alternative in the heat of summer to your hardscaped outdoor areas. The uniformity of a well maintained lawn accentuates your home and garden beds by providing a contrast. Be prepared! There are an array of options for creating a traditional lush lawn, but first things first - proper preparation of the site is critical to the success of your lawn. For a new lawn, existing growth and weeds should be removed and the area levelled. Drainage should be considered to avoid wet spots and flooding. Organic matter such as compost, manure and quality topsoil can be added to improve the quality of the site. Lawns require regular watering, so installing appropriate irrigation before establishing your lawn will help ensure its successful growth. • Ready lawn or instant turf will usually come with a premium price tag in exchange for immediate results. Consistent watering will be necessary and it may take time for the seams to disappear, but you’ll be able to relax on your soft lawn in no time. • Hydroseeding is when a mixture of mulch, fertiliser, seed and water are sprayed onto a prepared, level area. The mulch protects seeds and retains moisture. • Hand seeding is the most cost effective option available but requires careful attention to ensure an even spread. Once your lawn is established, regular maintenance is required to protect the investment you have made. Fertilising, spraying for weeds and watering are crucial to keep your lawn looking its best throughout the seasons.

It’s covered! There is a move towards lawn alternatives - spurred on by the significant burden of maintaining a lawn. For some, lawn mower noise and maintenance, excessive water consumption and chemical fertilising - and possibly allergies - can make a traditional lawn overwhelming. Ground covers are becoming a popular and eco friendly alternative. There are a range of native and exotic ground covers which blanket the ground and create a lush look. Most are able to withstand light foot traffic and require far less maintenance and watering than lawns. Popular ground cover options include thyme, leptinella, blue star clover, yarrow and moss. If considering a ground cover option, it is important to create a physical border for containment - otherwise it may be difficult to control lateral spread. Fake it! For the ultra low maintenance option, artificial turf has come a long way from the highlighter-green astro turfs of the past. There is now a huge range of natural colours, textures and varieties, which mimic real lawns. Guests won’t be aware you’re faking it unless they have a very close inspection. Artificial turf should be UV stabilized to avoid fading, although with minimal care it can last for years. The huge benefit of artificial turf is that it doesn’t require watering, fertilizing or weeding - and unlike its natural counterparts, it significantly reduces allergy triggers. Artificial turf is perfect for smaller areas or areas in which it might be tricky to navigate a lawnmower. Holidays such as Easter will always be part of life and should be enjoyed. You should be able to enjoy a break away from your usual exercise and eating routine at certain times of the year and feel good that you have mindfully planned to do so. However, with the excellent marketing of tasty treats and perhaps the temporary ceasing of your exercise programme during this period, you might be feeling annoyed or frustrated at yourself for over-indulging. If you’ve gone a bit overboard and need to reset or re-energise your body, then check out these two simple steps to get you back on track. 1. Move on froM the guilt What has happened in the past has already been and cannot be changed. It is important to be able to find a way to move on from guilty feelings about binging to help prevent other unhealthy behaviours from occurring – for example, binging on exercise to try and make up for it afterwards. I know it is difficult to put this step into practice just by telling yourself to move on, so here are a couple of tools that can help with acceptance and creating a positive mindset: • EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique). This can help to clear disruptions in your energy system caused by negative emotions that you are holding on to – in this case, the feeling of guilt from over

Make choices that nourish you Instead of focusing on things to avoid (e.g. sugar or chocolate) as a way of getting back on track, move away from the deprivation mindset and instead focus on what you can add to your body or life to help you to feel healthier. • Movement: Get back on track with your fitness after Easter by choosing a form of movement that you enjoy, rather than one you feel like you have to do. Do it with the purpose of enjoying it and feeling more energised rather than a negative mindset that tells you to work off the extra kilogramme or two you have gained. • food: Choose foods you enjoy that you know are nutrient dense and nourishing for your body. For example, buy your favourite fruits to snack on during the week. When you focus on optimal nutrition choices from a wide variety of foods your cravings for ‘quick fixes’ will usually decrease.

The New Zealand government’s decision to buy BMW 7-series cars for its ministerial fleet has always been met with opposition by those who feel more should be done to promote eco-friendly cars. Personally, I don’t have a problem with the use of the 740d; the engine is diesel-fed, it is economical and it easily meets rigid European emission standards. All that aside, I do believe the government here should be looking at the 740e, a hybrid version of the 7-series, it encapsulates all that the seven represents, but in a package that should satisfy the environmentally-conscious. The 740e is a trick piece of automotive design, the twinturbocharged, four-cylinder engine displaces just 1997cc, but in total it pumps out an amazing 240kW and 500Nm, assisted by all the benefits electric propulsion generates. And if you add into the equation a 2.1-litre per 100km combined-cycle fuel-usage claim, it all seems a little improbable. But, the reality is, those figures are verified and, what’s more, the 740e can travel up to 40km on electric power only. Not only does the hybrid system work alongside the engine, it also has plug-in capacity, that is the batteries can be charged using household electrical supply. It’s not just the mechanical engineering that makes the 740e rather special, everything about the car is trick – right from the doors that close by themselves (if they haven’t been pulled tight), to the hand commands, which will control many of the in-cabin features.

I guess for a car that will set you back $200,000 the 7-series would need to have a lot on offer, and it does. It is loaded with specification, which leaves nothing to the imagination. It also drives majestically, I‘m picking only a few will be sold to private buyers, it is a car that lends itself to chauffeur-driven limousine use, and that’s why it is the Crown’s choice for its ministers. Albeit, those in that pool are longwheelbase versions, whereas the test car was standard length. That aside, it is still the large, plush, luxury car that you would expect BMW to do well. It glides in motion and is so quiet you can never really tell what mode the driveline is in. Sure, you can select a sport mode, which displays the rev counter to show what the engine is doing, but in standard mode the comprehensive display graphics are structured towards economical motoring and encouraging the driver to make use of electrical current. The 740e offers startling acceleration. It will scamper to 100km/h in 5.6sec and will make a 240km/h top speed (if laws allowed). The feel

of acceleration is constant, and while it may be a hybrid, the big 740e isn’t lethargic, it constantly feels spirited and that’s amazing considering there is a lot of weight to shift at almost two-tonne. On the open road it gobbles up distance willingly, it rides softly, affording a glorious ride of luxury. Huge 20in Pirelli tyres are quiet and offer substantial grip, even though there is a lot of weight working against them. The 740e isn’t a car in which you can go gangbusters into a corner, but it does, very reassuringly, have balance and solidity. A lot of that has to do with drive through the rear wheels. The handling sensation is pure. If you also factor in the low position in the chassis where the hybrid system batteries sit, as well as the low ride height, the centre of gravity is such that the body doesn’t sway over the suspension, any body movement is arrested and controlled by the complexity of air suspension. BMW has adopted a fairly traditional approach to its hybrid mechanicals, it’s a bit like describing it as a Toyota Prius on steroids, and, of course, the 740e is a car of stature and grandeur. However, if hybrids aren’t your thing, the brand new 7-series also arrives with V8 petrol power or the six-cylinder diesel I mentioned in my introduction. While I couldn’t replicate those fabulous fuel-usage figures BMW claim, after 250km in the test car it was showing an 8.1L/100km (35mpg) combined cycle average, which is pretty smart under test conditions. BMW is working on a well-advanced programme introducing hybrid options throughout its range. That doesn’t surprise me, in the last few years most vehicles in its line-up have had battery-regeneration technology. I’m looking forward to driving more hybrids from this high-profile German manufacturer, perhaps something more middle-of-the-road, akin to the life I lead.

MAKES 400G / GLUTEN-FREE / DAIRY-FREE 400-540g coconut milk or coconut cream (see introduction for recommended brands) Plus one of the following: 2 Tbsp coconut yoghurt from a previous batch or store-bought coconut yoghurt with live cultures OR 2 probiotic capsules or ½ tsp quality probiotic powder (40 billion live cells per capsule) Quantities can be increased to make a larger batch. Scoop the coconut milk or cream into a clean 500ml jar and use a fork or small whisk to combine. If the thick cream in the can is too solid to mix into the liquid, gently heat the contents of the can in a small saucepan until melted together – don’t boil, just heat until combined – then pour into the clean jar and cool to around 40°C. Spoon in the reserved coconut yoghurt or open the probiotic capsules and sprinkle the powder over the milk/cream. Stir well then secure the lid. Place somewhere warm to ferment for 12-24 hours. PEKING ON PAPANUI Vanessa Ortynsky explores the newly re-opened Sala Sala.

A large estate stands out from Papanui Road, beckoning dinners from Merivale and beyond. The windows catch the early evening sun, and the fit-out makes Sala Sala the perfect setting for an evening out. Sala Sala reopened under new management at the beginning of this year, and it’s quickly becoming a mainstay in Christchurch’s culinary landscape. The new menu incorporates a variety of Asian dishes and is renowned for its Peking duck. We begin our meal with fresh salmon sashimi and pork, and chive dumplings cleverly warmed over tea-light candles. The steamed dumplings are ever-so-slightly pan-fried and served with soy sauce and chilli for extra zing. As per the owner Victor’s recommendation, we share the Peking duck for our main course. The Chinese speciality needs to be prepared a day in advance. The extensive cooking process means it’s often absent from the menus of contemporary Asian establishments. Having indulged in Peking duck a handful of times both in New Zealand and Hong Kong, it’s safe to say the duck on offer at Sala Sala tops the list for quality. Tender, succulent and crispy, the duck is served contemporary style with both skin and meat rather than only the crispy skin (which is customary in Hong Kong). The thin crêpe-style pancakes maintain their temperature thanks to bamboo steamers, in which boiled water sizzles for at least 10 minutes upon arriving at our table. The combination of the light crêpe and tender duck doused in plum sauce is an unbeatable combination, and we quickly devour the entire dish. They say you should judge a man by the company he keeps, and I think you should judge a restaurant by the quality of its Peking duck. Sala Sala has artfully mastered this delicacy. Whether or not you’re one for Peking duck, however, you’ll still love the carefully selected menu at this fine establishment. Victoria Street is something of a go-to area for an evening out, with bars and restaurants lining almost the entirety of its length. There are a handful of venerable places that have survived the transformation from a business district to an evening hotspot precinct. Chi Kitchen is located upstairs, on the second floor of The Christchurch Casino, which has stood at the southern end of Victoria Street for more than 20 years. Chi Kitchen presents diners with an authentic Cantonese menu and dishes inspired by the streets of Guangzhou. The décor is gently lit with red accents; departing from the large bright casino atrium with a quieter, more intimate setting. We are warmly greeted by several staff members and promptly seated. Before long, we have drinks in hand and are perusing the menu full of enticing mains and entrées. Jing Jin, the restaurant’s manager, directs our attention to the flat-screen TV above the bar, on which we have a live feed of the wok in the restaurant’s kitchen. The wok is a key feature for several of the menu’s dishes and we are keen to see it in action. From watching our dumplings, and stirfry mains being skilfully prepared, it’s clear that Chi Kitchen takes delight in the hospitality efforts of its staff. The attentive service is rarely found outside of an upscale hotel and is refreshing in such a relaxed location. The food is tasty and flavourful to the point at which you need to take care not to overindulge and crowd out dessert. We were treated to a number of bite-sized cakes and sweet delights while we sipped tea still mesmerised by the wok on the big screen. While Chi Kitchen now faces some competition from the numerous establishments popping up on this side of town, they are well up to the task, offering delicious food and unparalleled service.

PRISCILLA QUEEN OF THE DESERT OPENING NIGHT A huge dollop of camped up insanity gushed all the way from the Australian Outback to stiletto strut across the stage at the Isaac Theatre Royal, to be met with an uproar of approval. The first night of Priscilla Queen of the Desert was a sparkling success, seducing the audience to a state of helpless laughter. Appropriately attired fans whistled, hooted, waved and stomped as they sang along with the myriad disco and ‘70’s pop hits. Costumes as colourful as a bag of manic liquorice allsorts, minced and danced up a storm as overhead, the levitating Greek chorus combined to create a vision reminiscent of a comedic nightmare. The evening was truly fun and truly exhausting!

STUDIO 125 GALA GRAND OPENING Art lovers had a treat, just perfect for a warm autumn evening as Merivale basked in lingering twilight. Studio 125 was made ready for the flood of guests, invited to attend the grand opening. Crisply aproned waiters proffered good things which ministered to the needs of the palate, as the art did to the appetite of eyes and mind. Cruising through the rooms and outside in the garden, with footsteps crunching on the pastel shingle, attendees consumed the visual buffet of talent. Around every corner a fresh morsel awaited to tempt the attention. Studio 125 is up and running, ready to entice visitors who, may not want to leave.

As the dreamy tones of autumn began to manifest in nature, the dream world of fashion also unfolded and nowhere more so than at Corcovado, where Lynn Woods has woven her magic. Among the objects of stylish living, guests circulated and socialized awaiting the show’s commencement. The first confident steps on the catwalk heralded a steady procession of models, parading garments clad in which, one may greet the cooler seasons with elegance and swish. Within the gracious Victorian mansion, celebrations were underway as the ladies from Champs-Elysees Day Spa officially opened their new premises. Stepping inside, away from evening’s humid touch, guests were enveloped in a wonder world of elegant opulence, to marvel at the lush surroundings. The flavour of Ireland was being savoured at The Bog on the day before St Patrick’s day when a charity auction was turned on to aid the Bone Marrow Cancer Trust. The overwhelming colour was of course, green and within the dimly lamplit bar the fun was about to begin. Browsing the items up for grabs in the silent auction, guests made secret bids, conserving some resources for the noisy live one to follow. The tune tootling rustic band, provided the soundtrack for the evening which saw much needed money raised, enabling the trust to continue their efforts in combating this horrible disease.
